Applying to
universities
in China

China is not a single application system.

Chinese universities set their own requirements for academic preparation, language, documents and deadlines. Application procedures differ between universities and between programmes.

We assess the applicant’s profile, select suitable universities and programmes, build the admissions strategy and coordinate the process through to enrolment.

02 / UNIVERSITIES

Universities in China

The types of institution and typical examples. Click a name to open the university card.

  • Leading research universities

The most selective comprehensive universities in the country. Requirements, selection procedures and the language of instruction are set by each programme, and some programmes are taught in English.

  • Science and engineering universities

Engineering, the natural sciences, technology, medicine and architecture: universities with a historically strong technical and research school.

The names open cards and link to the universities’ own websites. They map the academic landscape rather than form a ready-made list: the conditions of a specific programme are checked for the current year of entry.

03 / PROFILE

The profile comes before the university list

A university’s name is not the starting point. First we establish which programmes are formally open to the applicant and how closely the profile matches the requirements: current education, academic results, the level of study chosen, the programme’s subject prerequisites, the language of instruction and its proof, and any further requirements of the individual university.

04 / LANGUAGE

Two language routes

Study in China runs in Chinese or in English. The language route shapes both the choice of programmes and the requirements to meet, so it is one of the first decisions fixed in the strategy.

CHINESE-TAUGHT

Chinese-taught programmes

Chinese language requirements depend on the university and the programme. A university may ask for proof of proficiency, such as HSK, and the level required is set by the individual programme.

ENGLISH-TAUGHT

English-taught programmes

For English-taught programmes the university may set its own requirements for proof of English, such as IELTS or TOEFL. Which test, and what result, depends on the individual programme and university.

05 / APPLICATION

One country. Different application procedures.

The application procedure can differ from university to university: each may run its own online portal, its own set of documents and its own deadlines. We coordinate the different portals, requirements and deadlines as one process.

06 / DOCUMENTS

The documents depend on the programme

There is no single set of documents for every Chinese university. Below are the typical categories; which of them are needed is decided by the individual programme.

03PROOF OF LANGUAGE
04CV
05PERSONAL STATEMENT
06RECOMMENDATIONS
07PASSPORT / IDENTITY
08PROGRAMME-SPECIFIC MATERIALS

A CV, a personal statement and recommendations are not required everywhere: the set is checked against the requirements of the specific programme.

07 / FUNDING

Funding is planned alongside the application

Funding is assessed while the universities are being chosen, not after an offer arrives: individual scholarship schemes have their own criteria, their own procedures and often earlier deadlines.

01

Chinese Government Scholarship

The Chinese government scholarship programme, with its own criteria, procedure and deadlines.

02

University scholarships

Some universities offer scholarships of their own. Terms and availability are checked on the university’s official pages.

03

Other funding

Other institutional or regional schemes exist in some cases; their availability and terms depend on the university and the programme.

No category means guaranteed funding: the decision rests with the university or the awarding body.

Scholarships and funding are a distinct strand of EDMONT’s work. We check the criteria, prepare the scholarship applications and keep their deadlines in the overall admissions calendar.

Undergraduate and postgraduate study

UNDERGRADUATE

Undergraduate study

For applicants coming from school, we check separately the qualification, the academic results, the subject prerequisites, the language of the programme and any additional entry requirements of the individual university.

Undergraduate study
GRADUATE

Postgraduate study

At master’s level what counts is the fit of the previous degree, the academic background and the relevance of previous coursework, the CV and experience where relevant, motivation, language and the requirements of the individual programme.
