Oxbridge does not select a profile. It selects a student for one subject, and the decision is academic from the first line of the application to the last question at interview.
EDMONT works with international applicants considering Oxford and Cambridge. This page sets out how selection works, how the two universities differ from each other, and what we assess in the qualification and the profile before any course is discussed.
We publish no admission rates and promise no outcome. The dates and requirements on this page are for 2027 entry and have been checked against the universities’ own pages.
Three things to understand before a course is chosen.
The applicant applies for one course and has to show readiness to study that subject: through grades in the right subjects, a test, written work and a conversation with tutors. Extracurricular activity counts only where it bears on the subject. This is the direct opposite of holistic admission at highly selective US universities.
The two universities share a UCAS deadline and then diverge: Cambridge has its own form, a transcript and College assessments; Oxford has different tests, its own written-work deadline and online-only interviews. There is no such thing as preparing for Oxbridge in general.
Oxford and Cambridge cannot both be chosen in one cycle, and at Oxford only one course can be chosen. The first decision is therefore not where, but which subject, and at which university that subject is structured so that the applicant’s case is stronger.
Both universities publish their requirements in detail. The line runs not between public and secret knowledge but between general rules and a particular applicant.
Whether the qualification is accepted, which subjects the course requires, whether there is a test or written work, and the deadlines. All of this is published, and we check it against the sources.
How this particular certificate or set of exams will be read, what is missing for a competitive level, where the same subject is structured so that the profile is stronger, and what risks the chosen course carries.
We match the qualification to the course and university requirements, choose the course and one of the two universities, plan preparation for the test, the written work and the interview, and bring every deadline into one calendar.
The direct answer: eligibility is set by the qualification and by the subjects the individual course requires. This has to be settled before a university is chosen.
A course usually cannot be changed after admission, so the choice is made in the application and for good. Many courses require particular school subjects, especially in the sciences and mathematics, and their absence closes the application before any grade is considered.
Both universities publish lists by country. Some national certificates are not accepted on their own: Cambridge says so of the Russian Attestat and names alternatives — A-levels, the IB, or five AP exams at score 5 with an Attestat graded excellent. The IB at Oxford means 38–40 points, at Cambridge 41–42.
Applications are made before final exams, so what decides is the grade prediction a teacher gives in the UCAS reference. In many countries grades are not normally predicted, and Oxford asks applicants to point their referee to its guidance for teachers. The reference goes with the application by 15 October.
The direct answer: the test depends on the course and the university, is booked separately from UCAS, and is taken around the application deadline.

The ESAT, TMUA and TARA are run by UAT-UK, and Oxford uses them from this cycle. Registration is not part of UCAS and does not happen automatically. For 2027 entry booking closes on 28 September 2026 and the tests run from 12 to 16 October.
On a number of arts and humanities courses, by 10 November. The work is school work, in English, up to 2,000 words, ideally marked by a teacher and not rewritten. If it was written in another language, both the original and the applicant’s own translation are sent. Tutors may discuss it at interview.
Usually on arts and social science courses; the College says whether it is needed, in what form and by when. The work is marked by a teacher, with comments. A translated piece is verified by the school or another suitable party.
The direct answer: the deadline is 15 October 2026, 6pm UK time, and the whole application must be complete by then, not only the Oxbridge part.
From 2026 entry UCAS replaced the single essay with three questions. There is one statement for all five choices. Oxford suggests giving about 80% to academic interest and showing how the applicant has engaged with the subject beyond the school syllabus rather than listing books.
Cambridge only, by 22 October. For most international applicants: a £60 fee, a transcript and details of how study will be funded. An optional additional statement of up to 1,200 characters; documents uploaded to UCAS are not reviewed by Cambridge for 2027 entry.
At both universities an applicant can name a College or make an open application. The College does not change the course requirements, but it decides who considers the application and, at Cambridge, the interview format. Colleges can pass a strong applicant between them.
The direct answer: it is an academic conversation about the subject, much like a short tutorial, not a motivational interview. Offers go only to those who have been interviewed.
How the applicant thinks about unfamiliar material: a text, a graph, a problem. Tutors steer the conversation by the answers and may draw on the personal statement and written work. Oxford states plainly that manners, appearance and background are not assessed.
Oxford holds all interviews online in December, often more than one and sometimes at more than one College. Cambridge’s main period is 7–18 December, online or in person as the College decides, usually one or two interviews of 35 minutes to an hour in total. Times generally cannot be moved.
Interviews are conducted in English, and the applicant has to reason aloud in it. Cambridge recommends at least IELTS 6.5 with 6.0 in each element at the point of application. For an applicant whose first language is not English this is a separate part of preparation, not merely a certificate.
The direct answer: only the UCAS deadline is shared. Forms, documents, tests, interviews and decision dates all differ.

The direct answer: the procedure is the same as for UK applicants, but the qualification, the language and the money each need checking separately.
Oxford states that the process is the same for everyone and that there is no international quota on any course except Medicine. Cambridge states that no priority is given to those paying the overseas fee. What differs is not the selection process but how the qualification is read.
Oxford needs no certificate at application: it expects one by 31 July of the offer year, without combining scores from different sittings. For admission Cambridge normally asks for IELTS 7.5 with 7.0 in each element, or a school qualification at C1 level.
An international student pays the overseas fee, which depends on the course; Cambridge adds a College fee. Oxford states that scholarships for international undergraduates are very limited and can only be sought after an offer. The budget is worked out before the course is chosen, not after a decision.
The order is the substance: the qualification is checked before the course is chosen, and the course before the university.
We do not calculate admission probabilities and do not claim to know how admissions committees reason: no consultant has information the universities do not publish themselves. We are responsible for verifying requirements, for an honest assessment of the applicant’s position, for the quality of preparation and for meeting every deadline. Under our agreement the second half of the fee falls due only after a formal offer of admission.
