How to Get Into Istituto Marangoni: Requirements, Set Tasks and Fees

The bachelor’s programmes at Istituto Marangoni in Milan: what to submit for design and for business courses, which language level and school record you need, and what a year costs. Based on the school’s official pages, last reviewed September 2026.

The short answer

Istituto Marangoni does not ask for a portfolio for its bachelor’s courses. Applicants to creative courses submit six creative ideas (sketches, drawings, photographs, mood boards or collages in A4 or A3); applicants to business courses submit a 700-word paper on one emerging trend. They also need a signed personal statement, a B2 language certificate (the school gives IELTS 5.0 as an example) and twelve years of schooling for Ministry-recognised courses. Fashion Design & Accessories in Milan costs €25,800 a year for non-EU applicants, plus an enrolment fee of €4,000 due every year.

What an applicant submits

  1. 01

    Online application

The school’s online form, a photograph, a passport copy, and a copy of the school-leaving certificate and grades. Applicants still in their final year submit a certificate of attendance or current transcript.

  2. 02

    Creative or written task

For design, styling and other creative courses: six creative ideas showing the applicant’s inspiration and chosen field. For business courses: a 700-word paper on one emerging trend in fashion or luxury, grounded in consumer behaviour, with visual research and a list of sources.

  3. 03

    Personal statement

A signed statement: why this course and this school, and what the applicant has already done in the field.

  4. 04

    Language

A B2 certificate in the course language for applicants whose first language is not English or Italian; the school gives IELTS 5.0 as an example.

  5. 05

    Twelve years of schooling

MUR-recognised (AFAM) courses require twelve years of schooling. Applicants from an eleven-year system need to cover the extra year in advance: with a first year at university, a recognised foundation year or another qualification.

  6. 06

    Enrolment fee

Proof of the enrolment fee transfer goes in with the application. It is due every year, not only on entry.

Six creative ideas: what the school looks for

Six ideas are not a collection of everything the applicant has made. They are read as a statement of direction: what inspires the applicant, how they think visually, and whether they understand the field they are entering.

The format is open: sketches, drawings, photographs, mood boards and collages in A4 or A3. Coherence matters more than technique: six unrelated pieces of uneven quality lose to six ideas that develop one line of thought.

For business courses, the trend paper needs to rest on specific consumer behaviour and sources rather than general remarks about sustainable fashion.

How much Istituto Marangoni costs

Fashion Design & Accessories in Milan, for the September 2026, January 2027 and September 2027 intakes: €25,800 a year for non-EU applicants and €22,550 for EU citizens. The €4,000 enrolment fee is due every year.

In Florence the non-EU fee is the same; EU citizens pay €21,550 (September 2026 and January 2027) and €22,000 (September 2027).

Accommodation, materials and insurance are extra. Other programmes and campuses have their own fees, so check the page of the specific course before applying.

Common mistakes

  • Treating Istituto Marangoni as a university: it is a private school, and MUR recognition applies to specific three-year courses in Milan and Florence, not to every programme the school runs.
  • Preparing a large portfolio instead of six ideas: volume does not help here; clarity does.
  • Overlooking the twelfth year of schooling: without it a recognised course is out of reach, and this tends to surface too late.
  • Budgeting only for tuition and forgetting the annual enrolment fee.

Who it suits

  • Applicants who want to study fashion in Milan, in English, without a large portfolio.
  • Applicants weighing design against business: the school offers both, with different selection formats.
  • If a public university and minimal fees matter, look at Politecnico di Milano: a test instead of creative tasks, and teaching in Italian.
