The US MBA: why admission does not work like a master's

In conversations about studying abroad the MBA is usually placed on the same line as a master's: a degree after the bachelor's, one or two further years, broadly similar application. At the level of words that is right. At the level of what the candidate actually does, it is not.

What follows sets out where the processes diverge, with figures and wording from two schools, Harvard Business School and Stanford GSB. The values belong to those schools and cannot be transferred. The structure of the differences, however, is the same everywhere.

Rounds instead of a deadline

An ordinary master's programme usually has one closing date. A business school has three, and they are called rounds. An application may be submitted once per cycle, in any one of them.

Harvard Business School opens Round 1 on the same day: 9 September 2026. The coincidence is not accidental. Schools set their calendars with an eye on one another, and a candidate applying to several works on all the applications at once.

Work experience: a requirement that may not exist

A common belief holds that no one is admitted to an MBA without several years of work. That describes the statistics of those admitted, not the rule of admission, and the two are worth separating.

Work experience is not required for entry to the Stanford MBA Program. We welcome applications from college seniors and recent graduates, as well as those with all levels of work experience.

That is a direct quotation from the Stanford GSB requirements page. The school adds that it prefers no particular industry or function, and that it is more interested in the impact a candidate has had in their workplace than in the name or stature of the organisation.

Separately there is deferred enrolment: applying in the final year of a bachelor's degree and starting later. At Harvard this is the 2+2 programme, and it carries its own set of essays, different from the main application. Stanford accepts deferred applications in any of the three rounds.

The interview as a separate stage

In a research master's there may be no interview at all, and where there is one it is often a conversation with a prospective supervisor. In an MBA the interview is built into the process and happens only by invitation.

Harvard describes the procedure in detail: the interview lasts 30 minutes and is conducted by a member of the Admissions Board who has already read the application. The school states plainly that an invitation is a positive indicator of interest but not a guarantee of admission, and that neither the timing nor the format of an invitation says anything about the status of an application.

Then comes a step that exists in no other admissions route: within 24 hours of the interview the candidate must submit a written post-interview reflection through the application system.

Twenty-four hours is not a recommendation but part of the procedure. A candidate who prepared on the logic of an ordinary master's may not have that step in their calendar at all.

Stanford attaches its own condition to interviews: an invitation is not issued without a valid test score submitted to the school.

GMAT, GRE and the validity of scores

Both schools accept the GMAT or the GRE and state no preference between them. Neither sets a minimum score. But Stanford publishes a detail that derails plans more often than the exam itself.

Scores are valid for five years, and the count runs from the deadline of the round, not from the date of submission. If a score expires before 1 June 2027, the official report has to be sent with the application, or the school may require the exam to be retaken.

Stanford separately forbids averaging results: where an exam has been taken more than once, the scores reported must come from a single test session, not the best sections from several.

English: no minimum, but a threshold

Harvard frames the language requirement like this: TOEFL, IELTS, PTE or Duolingo are required if the sole language of instruction at undergraduate level was not English. Where a master's degree was taught in English, a test is recommended but not required.

The school sets no formal minimum, and in the same passage discourages candidates from applying with a TOEFL below 109 out of 120, an IELTS below 7.5, a PTE below 75 or a Duolingo score below 145.

The degree: three years or four

Harvard requires a degree equivalent to a four-year American baccalaureate. The sentence that follows on the same page matters more than the requirement itself: three-year international bachelor's programmes are named as equivalent.

On admission the transcript goes to the third-party agency WES together with a word-for-word translation. The school reserves the right to withdraw an offer if the official document differs from the unofficial translation uploaded with the application.

The money works differently from a PhD

In doctoral study funding comes from a supervisor, a department or an assistantship. In an MBA that model does not exist. There are school scholarships and there are loans, and the proportion between them differs from school to school.

Stanford notes separately that all MBA students are eligible for financial aid regardless of citizenship. Most aid, however, arrives as loans, and the school advises international students to look first for a loan at home, where the rate may be better.

There is a reverse side. Stanford counts employer sponsorship as an external resource when assessing need, and students with sponsorship are typically not eligible for a school fellowship. An external scholarship below $40,000 does not reduce the award; above that it does, though not dollar for dollar.

STEM designation and the horizon after graduation

For a candidate who intends to work in the United States after the programme there is a parameter worth checking before applying. Harvard states that its STEM track gives international graduates a total of 36 months of work authorisation under OPT, rather than the standard period.

The difference between twelve months and thirty-six changes both the career plan and the economics of the whole undertaking. Whether such a track exists is a fact about a specific programme, and it is checked on that programme's page.

What follows from this

The conclusion is the same as elsewhere in American admissions: the structure of the process transfers between schools, the values do not. Every school runs rounds, but on different dates. Both schools accept the tests, but count validity in their own way. Both fund on need, but treat sponsorship and external scholarships differently.

• Establish the format: full-time, part-time, executive or deferred. It determines the experience required, the test accepted and whether a student visa is available.
• Choose the round with visa processing times in mind, not only the odds.
• Check the validity of test scores against the deadline date, not the date of submission.
• Establish the funding model before deciding about employer sponsorship.
• Check for STEM designation if working in the United States after graduation is part of the plan.
